A Big Bite
We started the week off with Dog Day and it was a highlight for many students! We completed dog themed math activities, responded to a non fiction text titled, "Helping Paws," debated the need for a membership only dog park (check it out on our Twitter feed) and watched Homeward Bound. There were some pretty awesome dog snacks and stuffed animals on desks too! It was an AMAZING Monday and a great way to celebrate the book Little Dog, Lost! On the 90th day of school, we completed a book count and so far this year we have read 614 books!!! #welovetoread. 😊
In math, we are extending fraction concepts with addition and subtraction of fractions. We will continue to learn about improper fractions and mixed numbers next week. Snow Treasure is our new interactive read aloud in reader's workshop and are loving some new graphic novels. Some of the titles that are being shared (and LOVED) among the readers are: Mighty Jack by Ben Hatke, Snow White by Matt Phelan and Narwhal, Unicorn of the Sean by Ben Clanton. In social studies we learned about some of the many monuments in Washington D.C. and learned about the D.C. research project. We are excited to start researching the monuments in school next week!
A highlight of the week was learning all of the new songs in chorus. The pop song is going to be fun!
We finished the week learning about Chinese New Year. This is the year of the rooster and we made Chinese lanterns depicting a rooster. Rory taught us all about "lai see," and everyone was excited to receive some lucky money. Thanks to Rory and the whole Teng family for sharing your culture with all of us. Happy New Year and 恭喜发财 / 恭喜發財 'Happiness and prosperity!'
