Family Field Trip

Author Alert!!! Family Field Trip!!! Join Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Merten and their families at the Northbridge Middle School in Whitinsville, Massachusetts on June 7th at 6:30 p.m. for an author visit with Jarrett J. Krosoczka.  Jarrett Krosoczka is the author of the popular Lunch Lady series.  This is the first book signing for Jarrett in a long time, so the audience will fill up.  Books will be available for purchase at the visit with cash or a check.  If time and weather permits, we will go to West End Creamery for ice cream when we are done.  This event is being hosted by The Whitinsville Social Library and should be a great time.  All family members are welcome to join and cost of books and ice cream are the responsibility of each family.  As this is an "after school hours event," families are responsible for supervising their student or any students that they bring to the event. We look forward to seeing you there!  Please find directions to NMS from JFK here.  Please find directions from NMS to West End Creamery here.

A Big Bite

We are in the final push to the end of the year after a long spring break!! It sounds like everyone had a great week with many students taking trips and enjoying time with family and friends. There were even a few foreign countries visited during break; Sawyer went to Iceland and Eiley went to Ireland. Also,  Mrs. Chandler completed the Boston Marathon, way to go Mrs. C!  The weather was great here in New England and has set us up for a delightful spring.
We completed the ELA MCAS this week AND we even finished The One and Only Ivan.  As part of National Poetry Month, we continued to write poetry and created Spine poems.  On Friday, we celebrated Poem in Your Pocket Day by sharing poems with each other.  We even stopped in to share poems with our 2nd grade friends in Mrs. Wilmarth's class.  She had a surprise for us!  She asked her former students to read the poems that they had written when they were in her class.  It was so much fun and AMAZING to see how far everyone has grown as poets.  Check out the Periscope video of our live Tweet when we were in Mrs. Wilmarth's room!
We have started geometry in math and are working on finishing our unit of study on adaptations in science.
Next week Ms. Liz, our Poet in Residence, will be a JFK to work with the students on more original poetry and on poetry in the oral tradition. It will be such an amazing experience for everyone.  Thanks to the PCC for funding this enrichment program. 🙌
Have a great weekend!

A Big Bite

What a busy two weeks we have had!  We have been Rap stars, performing our Rap poems and we have been "writing the rainbow," as part of The Poem Farm's poetry project. Writer's Workshop has also been all about point of view, students have been writing "alternate versions," to a story that they read about a seal.  This is good practice for the upcoming MCAS tests after the break.

We have been working on measurement skills in math and we will take a test on Tuesday.  Also, we have begun Algebra by working on Hands On Equations.  Ask your child to tell you all about it, we are having so much fun!  You can also click here to learn more about this exciting Algebra program!
We have been enjoying The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate and are making great connections to non fiction as we study animal adaptations in science.  We made a flip book about Mt. Rushmore in social studies last week.  We really had to focus, follow directions and stay in the Green Zone in order to be successful with this hands on project.  PHEW!!! We will travel to the west coast next week as our travels around the USA continue.
Every day we have a morning meeting and pairs of students have taken turns leading the Thursday meeting.  Rory and Jake had us LAUGHING OUT LOUD with the greeting they had us use this past week.  Ask your student all about it, it was fun!!
We have been posting many photos and videos to Twitter!  check out our feed on the right to see what we have been up to!
