A Big Bite

We have been working hard during the last two weeks. We are learning more about non fiction reading structures and text features and are applying these skills to content reading in science and social studies.  We did very well on the Mexico test (see the Kahoot pictures below), enjoyed a presentation on Antarctica by Mr. Whitmore, JFK parent and volunteer, and did a fun experiment about waves.  We have been ramping up our skills with a dictionary and are getting to be experts on reading dictionary definitions.  Now that our narratives are done in writer's workshop, we have been focusing on writing expanded sentences on a specific topic.  Be looking for a fun writing project to come home next week!  On Creative Arts Friday, we began a new interactive read aloud, Gone Fishing, and we love it! Thanks to the PCC, we will have the opportunity to Skype with Tamera Will Wissinger, author of Gone Fishing.  Speaking of Skype visits, we were able to Skype with  Kristin Gray, author of Vilonia Bebe Takes Charge.  Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Merten won a silent auction in order for this visit to happen. We really enjoyed our visit with Kristin.
Students completed their weather stations in project based learning and finished the Mexico web quest in Technology workshop.
We also participated in the first all school community meeting.  Our core value for the next six weeks is kindness and consideration.  The students in Room 23 often live these core values so this should be an easy one for us to model for others.
Wednesday, November 15th was National Educational Support Professional Day.  We made thankful posters for Mrs. Greene and Mrs. Leenhouts who work in our classroom everyday.  We are so thankful for all that they do to make us successful!
Next week is a short week full of learning and fun. Speeches will be on Tuesday in addition to the test on multiplication. We will be making some fun crafts and getting ready for the Thanksgiving holiday.  It is going to be great!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Juicy Nibble

We have been working on multi step word problems involving multiplication in math and everyone is doing a great job.  An interesting fact about today is that on this day in history, 2001, the first Harry Potter film opened in theaters. As an extra credit opportunity, students can create a multi step word problem involving multiplication using the Harry Potter series and characters. Click on the video below to get some inspiration! Have fun! I can't wait to read these tomorrow.

Poetry Please!

Now THIS is a list poem!  Well done, Alex!

Things to be if you're a hockey puck
By:Alex W.

Be a souvenir at an NHL hockey game
Be Connor McDavid's best friend
Be the hardest rubber object
Be blind and can’t hear
Be with my friends at every practice
Be a predator to the goalie
Be naked all the time
Be born in Canada

A Big Bite

Today was the 45th day of 4th grade and 4th grade is twenty five percent complete.  Can you believe it? Where has the time gone?
We started our week off with the Dig It program from the Haffenreffer Museum at Brown University. We learned what it was like to be an archaeologist!  The museum will be back three more times this year; thanks PCC!  Party in a bag on Halloween was a lot of fun.  There were many great treats.  On Wednesday, Mrs. Rivera, a parent from Mrs. Merten's room, came in to tell us all about Dia de los Muertos.  It was a great way to kick off our new unit of study on Mexico.  Check out the pictures below.  We will be focusing on non fiction reading structures and text features in reader's workshop. We have started a six week unit of study on multiplication and division.  Please continue learning the basic facts, it makes a huge difference when learning multi step multiplication and division.  Thanks!
Creative Arts Friday was again a high point of the week for many students as they participated in a web quest about Mexico, continued to build weather stations and completed list poems and partner poems. Next week is a short week with days off on Tuesday and Friday.
Have a great weekend!

Author Alert

Jeff Kinney

Jeff Kinney will be at An Unlikely Story to introduce the newest book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, The Getaway. Jeff will do a presentation, answer questions, and personalize books for fans.
Tickets will be available at 5pm on Thursday, November 2nd. Our seating is limited to 200, so we do expect this event to sell out very quickly. Tickets include admission for two and a copy of The Getaway.
Frequently Asked Questions:
  • Did the tickets REALLY sell out in 30 seconds? Unfortunately, the answer is yes. The demand for our amazing roster of author events is frequently much higher than our seating capacity. We do our best to make it as fair as possible, but not everyone wanting tickets will be able to reserve them.
  • Can I bring books from home? Yes, you can! Although we don't want to put a limit on the amount of books you bring, we would ask that you please be mindful of everyone else in line.
  • Can we take pictures? Yes! You can take pictures at the presentation, and when you meet Jeff to get your books signed.
  • Can I get a signed copy of THE GETAWAY if we're not able to get tickets to the event? Yes! You can either call the store or visit our website to order an autographed copy. Simply add "Signed copy" to the comments section of your order. We are NOT able to offer personalized copies.
Event date:
Wednesday, November 29, 2017 - 5:00pm
