A Big Bite
We started the week off with Dog Day and it was a highlight for many students! We completed dog themed math activities, responded to a non fiction text titled, "Helping Paws," debated the need for a membership only dog park (check it out on our Twitter feed) and watched Homeward Bound. There were some pretty awesome dog snacks and stuffed animals on desks too! It was an AMAZING Monday and a great way to celebrate the book Little Dog, Lost! On the 90th day of school, we completed a book count and so far this year we have read 614 books!!! #welovetoread. ๐
In math, we are extending fraction concepts with addition and subtraction of fractions. We will continue to learn about improper fractions and mixed numbers next week. Snow Treasure is our new interactive read aloud in reader's workshop and are loving some new graphic novels. Some of the titles that are being shared (and LOVED) among the readers are: Mighty Jack by Ben Hatke, Snow White by Matt Phelan and Narwhal, Unicorn of the Sean by Ben Clanton. In social studies we learned about some of the many monuments in Washington D.C. and learned about the D.C. research project. We are excited to start researching the monuments in school next week!
A highlight of the week was learning all of the new songs in chorus. The pop song is going to be fun!
We finished the week learning about Chinese New Year. This is the year of the rooster and we made Chinese lanterns depicting a rooster. Rory taught us all about "lai see," and everyone was excited to receive some lucky money. Thanks to Rory and the whole Teng family for sharing your culture with all of us. Happy New Year and ๆญๅๅ่ดข / ๆญๅ็ผ่ฒก 'Happiness and prosperity!'

A Big Bite
Four full days of fun in room 23! We participated in several project based learning activities to enhance our learning across the curriculum. In reading we spent time using Chrome books to research different breeds of dogs and to find a dog that would be a good fit for the family. We will celebrate ,"Dog Day," on Monday and it will be exciting, guaranteed! We continued making progress writing essays in writer's workshop, writing scripts in technology workshop and learning about the Muses in poetry workshop. We participated in math centers twice this week before taking a test on basic fraction concepts. We will begin adding and subtracting fractions next week. Our travels around the US have moved beyond the Northeast and we will be visiting Washington D.C. next week. Make sure that you check out the Twitter video showing the 4th graders participating in the JFK version of The Mannequin Challenge. If you look closely you will see a proposal! Enjoy!

A Big Bite
We laughed A LOT this week and it felt GOOD!!!! Our chorus concert went very well on Friday. Be on the lookout for some YouTube links over the weekend featuring the concert this morning. We have worked hard across the curriculum and have used technology in all areas. We have been researching, reading, writing, debating (check out our Twitter live feed video) learning about the northeast, listening to Martin Luther King Jr.'s I Have a Dream Speech, and we are loving fractions! We especially love the food fractions. ๐ Our days are so full of learning, laughter and fun. What a great group of young people. Ask your young person to tell you all about our week.

A Big Bite
2017 is off to a great start! We are working on research in reader's workshop. We are focusing on main idea, topics and details in books on dogs and will use these skills as we complete other research projects throughout the year. Many students said that reading was a highlight from the week. Writer's workshop focused on finishing extension activities in the fiction unit. There are several wordless picture books, fantasy stories and "part 2," stories ready for publication. We will be starting essay writing next week! In Poetry workshop, we learned about Robert Frost and wrote free verse poems about weather, in the style of Robert Frost. We even got to listen to Frost recite some of his poems. Click here to listen to The Pasture, and click here to listen to The Road Not Taken. Enjoy!
In Math we have been reviewing multiples and prime and composite numbers as we prepare for the fraction unit which will last for several weeks. We are using a variety of resources, hands on materials and games to master these skills.
We have begun our study of the regions of the United States by learning all about the characteristics of a region. We will start learning about the Northeast next week!
I am looking forward to Chorus concert on Friday! See you there!
