A Big Bite
Our week started out with the Indian holiday of Diwali and the Halloween holiday. Check out the JFK Ladybug and our Twitter feed for our Diwali pictures! We celebrated Halloween by completing a variety of curriculum activities that were Halloween themed. The party in a bag snacks were great and everyone enjoyed their special treats. The country of Mexico, its history, people and culture is the next unit of study in Social Studies. To learn about the Day of the Dead celebration we colored masks in addition to coloring flags to learn about the Mexican flag. Our weekly mantra was la persistencia conduce el exitio. Ask your child what this Spanish mantra means, it is an important message. The science quiz went very well, everyone is developing their own study habits and discovering what steps they need to take to be prepared for a quiz. Great job! We finished the patterning unit in math and will be starting multiplication. On Thursday, we will have Black and White day to celebrate the conclusion of Mr. Popper's Penguins. Everyone is really enjoying the story and improving reading skills at the same time. Don't forget to study for the vocabulary quiz which will be next week! Poetry teams are writing Cinquain poems about Mr. Popper's Penguins and we can't wait to share them with you!
As part of one of our morning meetings, we participated in our first debate! Students debated whether or not animals should be launched into space for the purposes of scientific research. It was very lively! This is an activity that we will repeat throughout the year. So much fun!
It is a three day week for students next week, so we will be very busy trying to "get it all in." 4th grade is flying by!
