Marcus and Rorden's Adventures on Bark Lane by Jan Alcock
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
What a fun and exciting tale of two friends who go on an adventure with unexpected twists and turns! Readers will love that the characters are all dogs, dressed in clothes, living in houses and have a community. Marcus and Rorden are hoping to have some fun on their own in their neighborhood on the first day of vacation, without their parents knowledge, and quickly run into troubles along the way. They are recognized by relatives, friends and other adults in the neighborhood and learn that being out on your own can be very stressful. They decide to head back to the safety of their own homes and not rush growing up, a good lesson for young readers. The illustrations are beautifully detailed, realistic, and add depth and meaning to the story. A wonderful book for debut author, Jane Alcock.
Ruby Lee and Me by Shannon Hitchcock
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
So much going on here; sister in a car accident, segregation, school integration, moving, first love, new school, racism in the south. Many ideas to discuss with students.
