A Big Bite

What an amazing two weeks we have had in room 23!  We have had some great programs and special visits and we have been working hard on academics and group work.  Two of our classmates, along with another student from JFK, even got to say the Pledge of Allegiance at a school committee meeting.  They did great!
We had a visit from Daniele Niles, meteorologist from  WBZ news, Boston, and we even were on television the day after her visit! So cool!
Firefighter Darling, from the FFD came to JFK to teach us about fire safety in our homes.  He encouraged all of us to create an escape plan and a family safe spot in case of a fire in our homes.  We really enjoyed his presentation.
We have been learning about the Southeast in social studies and will take a test on Thursday of the upcoming week.  In science, we are learning about ocean currents and tides  and will focus on wild weather next week.  Our last weather test will be on April 14th.
In math, we have been studying measurement, both customary and metric units.  The test on these skills will be this Tuesday.  On Wednesday, all 4th graders will participate in the Measurement X Games.  It  will be a great way to synthesize our learning in the measurement unit AND a lot of fun.
You would be amazed by our discussions and focus in reader's workshop surrounding The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate.  The students are demonstrating the progress they have made over the year by engaging in analytical discussions about the story and everyone is working hard to make improvements in writing in response to reading.  We also have been keeping an observation journal of animals in the wild and at the zoo.  The students are having fun with this activity and are making great connections to our story.
In writing, we have started Spine poems and are writing expert pieces.  Students are still narrowing down their ideas for the expert piece and are looking forward to writing in this genre.
Have a great weekend!
Mrs. Williams
