A Big Bite

It was another great week in room 23!  We finished The One and Only Ivan in reader's workshop and it was quite an emotional ending. Here is a link to a video of the real Ivan taken when he lived at Zoo Atlanta. We are looking forward to the book party this Friday, there are so  many fun activities planned! In math, we have started a unit on division and are going to learn the "low stress," method of long division next week.  Verbs are part of our word study and we are working hard on identifying action verbs and helping verbs in sentences. Everyone received a copy of the speech (and the scoring rubric) that is due on November 26th.  Mrs. Marano has offered to listen to anyone practice their speech, BEFORE the 26th, to give pointers and tips to individual students.  Students are able to see her from 8:15-8:30 in room 22.  Thanks, Mrs. Marano! In science, we have been learning about Gregor Mendel and his work with pea plants.  Next week we will learn more about inherited and non inherited traits. Mexico is an exciting country to study and this week we learned about the Day of the Dead celebration which takes place on November 1st.  We watched a Power Point presentation and made masks. We finished writing haiku poems in poetry workshop and begin writing poems about the characters from The One and Only Ivan.  It was so much fun.   In addition, the Power Point presentations that we created with Mrs. Merten during tech are almost finished.  Students had a great time using transitions and sounds in their slides.  Halloween was exciting and the "Party in a bag," snacks were very creative. :)  Many students in room 23 have decided to run for the JFK Student Council.  Speeches will be on Wednesday at 8:45!  November is here and Thanksgiving is just around the corner.  4th grade is flying by!
