It was a full week without any snow days-woo hoo!! It was great to get to spend five full days together learning and having fun. We finished fractions and took the test on Friday, everyone did great! We are ALMOST done with essays and will be starting a new writing unit soon. We began learning about weather and watched a cool Bill Nye video about the wind. Click the video below to watch it again. We will be learning about clouds next.

In reading, we finished our hero work and took an online assessment in Google Classroom. It was a learning curve for everyone. Learning to write in a specific time frame will take practice. :) We also started a mini unit on mythology. Next week is Read Aloud week and we have some fun activities planned. Stay tuned for more frequent updates next week.
We finished the unit on the Northeast and did a great job on the test. On Friday we learned about the upcoming Washington D.C. project that will be due on March 20th. We will be spending time in technology workshop researching the monuments for each individual report. In addition, we received our last speaking activity for the year and they are due on March 17th.
At the school committee meeting, Andrew and Daniel recited the Pledge of Allegiance. They did a great job and had a lot of fun!
We have been learning about the many resources of the Northeast. A few classmates will be attending a Maple Sugaring Event in the the upcoming months at the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary. Click here for more information on this fun event. Thanks to Mrs. Cronin for sharing this exciting news.

| The Cupid Shuffle at Dance Party Friday! |
Well, we had another snow day and a delay, which made for a short week, but we were able to accomplish so much! We continued to work on fractions and will have a test when we return. In writing, we finished the drafts of our essays and should be revising and editing when we return. We are reading about real child heroes and are preparing to write a constructed response in Google Docs about all that we have learned. We have been enjoying independent reading a great deal lately. Some of our favorite books are
In poetry workshop we have finished snowflake poems and are starting to draft altered text poems. It is so much fun! We finished our unit of study on humidity and precipitation and will be learning about clouds and wind next. Our journey around the northeast taught us about some important places like The Statue of Liberty and Pitttsburgh. Did you know that the Heinz Ketchup company is located in Pittsburgh? Party in a Bag was a huge success, as usual, and we had a fun end to our week learning about Roman Mythology through the story of Cupid and Apollo. Thank you for all of the Valentine treats. :)
We are looking forward to reading and resting during vacation. Hopefully we will not get too much more snow.
Happy Valentine's Day, have a great week!

Author Alert!
Author Kate Messner poses with the boys after signing their books at Wellesley Bookstore tonight! Ms. Messner gave a great presentation on her writing process, read from her new book, and talked about some of her favorite new books. I have some of her books and some of her recommendations for our class. She was very kind and gracious. It was a fun night, even when Mr. Williams accidentally photo bombed the boys. :)

We had a great visit from the Haffenreffer Museum this past Wednesday. We learned all about the Inuit, it was a lot of fun. Don't forget, tonight at Wellesley Bookstore, Kate Messner, a favorite author in our classroom, will be giving a presentation and signing books. Also, tomorrow is "National Take Your Child to the Library Day." Go and check out some books before the snow starts to fly, again! Also, here is a link to the Cupid Shuffle dance, which we will be doing on the next Dance Party. Get groovin.'

Juicy Nibble

It was a short week given the two snow days due to the blizzard. We added and subtracted fractions with like denominators and will do mixed numbers and improper fractions next week. In word study, we are learning about adverbs and will be tracking adverbs in our independent reading. Snow Treasure will be finished next week and we are all excited to find out how it ends. We are writing essays in writer's workshop and snow poems in poetry workshop. Click here to make a virtual snowflake. Mrs. Silvia will be here next week for another presentation from the Haffenreffer museum. We are excited to welcome her back to JFK.
There is a survey for students to complete, click here to take the survey. Have a great weekend!

Never be afraid to be yourself. Frances Dean learns this important message by Birgitta Sif. :)
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I loved this story about how things sometimes get "messed up," in life and how it is helpful if we just learn to let it go. :) The art is pretty cool, too!
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
An interesting twist on a familiar story. Great for point of view and author's voice/craft. Masterful pictures.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Incredible art and illustrations. Students will enjoy taking time to examine each page and discovery all of the different elements presented. A great lesson on how sometimes a story can get out of hand quickly, especially if you don't set the facts straight from the beginning. The ending will leave some students wondering about what happens at school the next day.
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Everyone is an artist and this book proves just that. Students who are reluctant to experience art because they aren't "good at it," will enjoy the message of this story.
