A Big Bite
Room 23 is marching through March. We have begun a new math unit on measurement and are learning all about conversions of standard units. We have finished the mini unit on Greek mythology by reading a play called, The Gods and Goddesses Bakeoff. It was very engaging! We wrote essays about heroes and completed poems with a mythology theme. The Washington D.C. projects were well done, I can tell that the students worked hard. Reading the projects makes me want to go back to D.C. for a visit. We continued our travels around the southeast, learning about the natural resources, the climate, geography and wildlife that makes this such an exciting region in the US. We celebrated two special days, Crazy hair day on Tuesday and World Down Syndrome Day on Thursday (check out our pictures of socks for #rockyoursocks). The Franklin Fire Department taught us about fire safety on Monday in addition to a visit from author Andy Griffiths. Everyone at JFK participated in an all school meeting on Tuesday. We will be focusing on the core values of respect and safety in the upcoming weeks.
One of our classmates has a favorite DVD of songs and videos that we were able to watch during indoor recess. We all had fun singing along to the songs. Thanks for sharing it, Eric! We loved it!
Keep reading, keep practicing the math facts and keep up!
Have a great weekend!

A Big Bite
We are learning about Greek mythology and the students are really enjoying this genre. We began writing poems based on concepts and ideas from mythology and writing the "next chapter," of Snow Treasure has gone well. Students worked in teams to complete a sled building engineering challenge. Thank you to everyone who sent in materials for this project. Thanks to the PCC for sponsoring the Animal Adaptations enrichment program from the Museum of Science, we loved it!!! We have moved from Washington D.C. to the southeast and we took a VR trip to the Everglades on Friday. The Southeast is such a fun region to learn about and many of us have been to this region of the United States. Our focus in math has been decimals and fractions and this week we will tackle concepts related to measurement. Keep practicing those multiplication and division facts, it is vital to math success. Ask your child about the pictures you see below, they can give you specific details about our daily learning.

A Big Bite
I can't believe that we have been back from vacation for two weeks! In that time we have learned more about fractions and decimals, taken a Google Expedition to Washington D.C. and have written a research paper about Washington D.C. We also finished Snow Treasure in reader's workshop and have started a mini unit on Greek mythology. Our dog essays are done and we have started to write, "the next chapter." in Snow Treasure in addition to writing snowflake poems. We have had several special activities as well; Haffenreffer Museum, Webinar with Cressida Cowell and Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character day. Some authors even liked our Tweets about their characters and tweeted back at us (see Twitter Roll on the right). Who would have thought that our first snow day of the year would be in March but that happened too! Next week brings a math test and the last speech of the year. Ask your child about the pictures below. Time is flying by in 4th grade. Phew!
