A Big Bite
We started the week with another snow day, let's hope that is the last one! Though it was a short week, Tuesday got us rolling with Valentine's Day celebrations. The homemade Valentine boxes were very creative.💗 In math we are working on multiplying fractions and on making connections with fractions and decimals. These are new skills for everyone, so we are taking our time to make sure that the concepts are mastered. We continued our travels around the southeast by learning about some unique land forms, the natural resources and some important people of the southeast. We will finish our travels in this region after vacation and will take an open book/open notes test later in the week. The study guide was sent home two weeks ago. The Washington D.C. projects were very informative and several students completed the extra credit by building a model of a monument. They were very creative and made from some very interesting materials. Nicely done! Many students have started to type the final copy of their essays and have almost finished the snowflake poems. In poetry workshop we discussed famous African American poets and learned how to write a rap poem. We will continue this work after vacation. Thursday was World Read Aloud Day and we celebrated with Mrs. Wilmarth's class. Many of us remember participating tin this activity as 2nd graders so it was fun to be the, "big kid," this time. Make sure that you click here to take a look at the slide show that the students created to celebrate their picture book. Tech workshop and Project Based Learning was a hit on Friday.
From conversations at morning meeting and end of the week meeting, it sounds like there are many fun activities planned for vacation like; skiing, bowling, Florida, hotel stays, sports tournaments, baking and READING!!! Have a relaxing break! See you in a week.

Juicy Nibble
We celebrated World Read Aloud Day with Mrs. Wilmarth's 2nd grade class. We read, painted, used technology and conversed with each other about our books and reading in general. The students created a slide show of their book as part of a Google Classroom assignment. Please click here to view the slideshow. Make sure you click the PRESENT button to view it with the links live. Feel free to leave a comment (you can comment when the presentation is in the edit mode) and let us know what you think. We will be assembling all of the paintings into one book and will be sending the book home with students for you to enjoy. Keep the celebration going by reading a book together tonight!

Today we learned about famous people of the southeast. BB King was born in Mississippi and died in May of 2015. He was one of the greatest Blues musicians of all time. We listened to his song The Thrill is Gone. Check out the video below!

WOW!! Another snow day, oh boy! I had planned for us to make Valentine card holders today, but that isn't going to happen, so.....why don't you try making one at home? It is VERY cold outside and you won't be able to be out there for long, so when you are done reading, try some crafting. You can use whatever supplies you have around the house, paper plates, boxes etc. I think a paper bag is the easiest to decorate! Just use markers, crayons or any other supplies that you have and decorate. You will be using this to hold your Valentine's and tomorrow you will fill the holders of other students first thing! I have posted a few pictures of some Valentine holders as examples, but feel free to do create your own unique design! Have fun and remember to put your name on it. Also, help out by cleaning up all of your supplies. 😊 I know this question is coming from a few of you, "Do I have to do it?" If you do not, your classmates will make a pile of Valentine's on your desk which will have to be stored in your backpack until it is time for "Party in a bag." So, you decide if you "have to do it."
Happy Crafting!

A Big Bite
We have been very busy these past two weeks with studying fractions and this work will continue after the winter break. The snow storm coincided with a major plot point in Snow Treasure, our latest interactive read aloud, so we couldn't have planned the snow day any better. The genre of "adventure," is new to many students and everyone seems to be really enjoying it. We especially like the use of chapter cliffhangers as an author's craft. Many students are reading books by African American authors and illustrators and we are enjoying the stories. Some students are putting together Google Presentations to showcase their learning and they look great so far! It will be exciting to share them when they are done. Our essays are at the rough draft stage and many students are adding mini stories to support their claim. We have been working with Mrs. Richards in word study and have been studying "agents." We look forward to working with her more in the future. Washington D.C. projects are due next Thursday and we have moved onto the southeast. Many of us have visited the southeast and love it there, but would prefer to live in the northeast. The southeast just gets too hot for many of us and we like the culture of the northeast.
We will be celebrating Valentine's Day next week with party in a bag. Students will be able to distribute their Valentine's on Tuesday morning! Make sure that you follow us on Twitter @shinyredapple23. We love to LIVE Tweet parts of our day!
