A Big Bite
Another full week! We are really accomplishing so much during the full weeks. We participated in math centers, took a math test AND started a new math unit. We played a game with Mrs. Merten's class called, "Ring that Bell," to help prepare for the social studies class. It was so much fun! We are really enjoying Mr. Popper's Penguins and are working hard to improve our skills in writing in response to reading. As part of our word study, we are examining the four different types of sentences and will be tracking sentences during nightly reading. Writing teams have been working to provide specific feedback for revision of narratives to individual team members. We are practicing using feedback other than, "good story," or "I liked your story," to help each other make changes to written work. This can be hard but everyone is trying to be as specific as possible with their feedback. We will work on this all year. List poems are almost complete in poetry workshop and we will be writing partner poems next week. The science quiz on weather instruments, air pressure and the water cycle will be on Wednesday.
Our grade level meeting on Monday morning, daily morning meetings in the classroom and end of the week class meeting are a great way for us to build community in the classroom and help us all to learn and grow together. It was fun to have Mrs. McNeil join us on Wednesday morning. We had just shared with each other what we had eaten for dinner on Tuesday night and Mrs. McNeil jumped right into the conversation. It was exciting to learn what she had for dinner on Tuesday; ask your child if they remember what she ate, it was a very interesting and fun dinner!
Monday is Halloween and should be a fun filled day. Don't forget your, "party in a bag!"
Sunday is Diwali!! Happy Holiday!
Have a great weekend!

You're It!
It is the second week for, "You're It!" Who would have thought that so many people would want to be, "It?" Check out the growth mindset on the shirt of this week's, "It!" #takeabow #celebratealllearners
A Big Bite
It was our first full week in a while and we filled every moment! We kicked the week off with our 4th grade community meeting and we received a package from Antarctica that contained a stuffed penguin, a puzzle and a copy of Mr. Popper's Penguins by Florence and Richard Atwater. Check out the big "reveal," in the video below.
We are continuing to build classroom community by holding daily meetings and end of the week classroom meetings. It continues to be a learning experience for everyone. Ask your child about what happens at, "morning meeting," you may be surprised by what you learn.
In reading, we are tracking character traits, answering thick and thin questions and using predicting as a strategy for monitoring comprehension as focus skills for this book. We also had a great author visit from Bad Kitty author, Nick Bruel. He was so funny and we learned all about how he creates a fiction story. We will try his strategies when it is time for us to write fiction stories. In writer's workshop we worked on creating strong leads and are ready to start drafting narratives. We all completed rough drafts of list poem s in poetry workshop.
Topic one in math, basic multiplication and division, wrapped up on Friday and we will be participating in centers on Monday before taking the topic test on Tuesday. We finished learning about maps and globes in social studies and participated in the first of four presentations about Native Americans with an interactive program presented by the Haffenreffer Museum from Brown University. The archaeologists had a lot of fun digging for artifacts. Our first mini weather unit is complete and we will take a test on weather instruments, the atmosphere, high and low pressure and the water cycle on November 2nd. 4th grade is fun, full of excitement and learning!

During the school year, we will be celebrating individual students each week by recognizing their efforts, accomplishments and citizenship as members of Room 23. The celebration generally will take place at our end of the week meeting on Friday, but may take place at any other time. Each student will be chosen at least once, but may be chosen a second time based on individual efforts. Always put forth your best because you never know if you may get caught being, "It!" At our class meeting we will brainstorm hashtags that are personalized to each student. Congratulations to our first, "It!" #takeabow!
