Bookworm Buzz

I promised to read more chapter books as part of my #bookaday goals for the remainder of the summer, but there are so many great picture books out this year, I just couldn't stop checking them out from the library. I think that I may have found my favorite of the summer so far...can you figure out which one it is? Leave a comment with your guess. As far as goals go, I have exceeded my 75 book goal and am now at 82 books! I think my new goal will be 100 books in 68 days. How is your summer reading going? Leave a comment and let me know.

An interesting chapter book with a twist that I didn't see coming.  A little tough to follow the plot, it seemed unorganized at times, and I felt like several of the characters were undeveloped.  These two elements will lead readers with many questions.  Maybe it just wasn't my style.

An oldie but a goodie!  I loved this book, it made me laugh out loud.  I know that I can find a way to use this book in a mini lesson this year.

I have heard so much about the floating island of plastic in the Pacific, so I just had to read this book.  I learned so much and had many of my questions about the island answered.  There are some great additional resources listed at the back.  Enjoy!

This book will make a great addition to our text set which includes the interactive read aloud Mr. Popper's Penguins.  It will be a great mentor text for writer's workshop. Enjoy!

Marc Brown, author of the popular Arthur series, writes a wonderful travel guide to New York City.  I can tell how much he loves NYC; it is evident in the prose and illustrations.  It will be a great mentor text for non fiction writing. Check it out from your local library and plan a trip to NYC, you won't be disappointed, with the book or the trip!

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
It was fun to make character connections with this book. It will make a great companion book to The Night Before Kindergarten.  Our younger friends will enjoy this book!

I love the way this book presents all of the great ways books can inspire readers.  The illustrations are unique and there are plenty of pictures to read.  I think this one will make the cut for the first few weeks of school. :)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I love everything about this book.  I particularly loved the illustrations.  The message about the many different types of readers, and how the librarian is a wonderful friend to have, is strong.  This book will definitely be a part of the early weeks of reader's workshop.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I LOVED this book.  If you have had me as a teacher, you will understand why I can connect so closely with Ms. Kirby.  I really enjoyed the dedication.  This will be one of my first day of school books. :)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A must read for every teacher the night before the first day of school.  I could imagine Mrs. Merten, Mrs. Adams, Ms. Farrell and myself as any of the teachers in this book.  One of our favorite things to say is "Wait, let's try again,"  just like Flamingo.  I know that this will make the list of First Day reads. :)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The lesson possibilities with this book are endless, math workshop, reader's workshop, word study, art with Mrs. Hess to name just a few.  Liv and her friend Jay thought it was AMAZING and they are HS Seniors.  They saw concepts in the illustrations that I didn't see the first time I read this book, so we will really have to read the pictures in this book. I can't wait to share this one!
