Mr. Whitmore came into our classroom today to tell us about his trip to Antarctica and to teach us about penguins. It was a great presentation and everyone LOVED it. Here are some of the pictures that he shared with us. Very cool!
Welcome! My name is Mrs. Williams and I am a fourth grade teacher and Radiant Child Yoga Instructor. I have been teaching for too many years to mention! I love teaching and working with young people! Check out my "Meet Mrs. Williams," page on my website for more in depth and fascinating information.
Dear Reader,Choosing a "just right" book is easy to do if you remember a few simple guidelines.
1. The book should make you feel strong as a reader. If the book does not make you feel strong as a reader, it is a "someday book."
2. Do the Five Finger Rule. Turn to the middle of the book and read out loud. Every time you stumble on a word, lift one finger. If you raise five fingers, this book won't make you feel strong as a reader, and is a "someday" book. Raising three fingers means that this book is probably a bit of a challenge and you will need some support from an adult. Raising one finger or less means that this book is "just right," for you.
3. Don't forget to "Clunk it!" Turn to another page and read out loud again. Every time you read a word that you don't understand, raise one finger. If you raise two or more fingers on a page, this is probably a "someday book," for you. Just because you can read the words doesn't mean it is a "just right" book for you if you don't understand the words. For example, I could read the words in a Quantum Physics text book, but I wouldn't be able to understand them, and this book would not make me feel strong as a reader, so it wouldn't be "just right" for me, it would be a "someday book."
4. It is o.k. to read a "vacation," book. Reading "vacations," help improve our reading stamina and help to increase our love of reading. Also, rereading some of our favorite books, especially if they are "vacations," help to improve our reading stamina.
5. Vary your reading diet.Reading a variety of genres helps you to grow as a reader and enables you to be able to have many "talk worthy topics" with other readers. If you only ate one type of food, like candy, you wouldn't grow strong and healthy, even if it seemed like fun. Your brain needs to grow too, just like your body. Trying new genres is like trying new foods, especially vegetables, you never know what you might like!
Read on, Reader,
Love, Mrs. W

This list of books is for middle school and high school students as the length, vocabulary and/or themes are not "just right" for fourth grade students. This list reflects newer literature, as opposed to some of the classics, but I am open to your suggestions. It is a "someday" list for fourth graders. The list is done by book title, not author, so as to avoid any confusion with the suggesstions. If you want to make a suggestion, send me an email, or make a comment on the blog. New books will be added to the top of the list. I look forward to hearing from you!
