A Big Bite
Long division was all the rage this week and we are making great progress! Low stress division is nothing like the method of division that parents learned when they were in school, but is a great way to learn how to divide. The traditional method of division will be learned in 5th grade.
We have started a new unit in science on weather and a unit in social studies on Canada. There is so much to learn and it is all exciting! Ask your child to tell you what they have learned this past week and what they hope to learn in the upcoming weeks.
We are writing fiction stories in writer's workshop in addition to studying Robert Louis Stevenson in poetry workshop. We are still reading Little Dog, Lost by Marion Dane Bauer but we are almost done. It is such a fun and exciting book!
If the next few weeks go as quickly as this past week, we will be on winter vacation before you know it!
Have a great weekend,

WOW!! It has been a very exciting and FUN week and a half in room 23. We finished a unit on multiplication in math and will start division next week. In science, we are done with the life cycles unit and will begin a unit on weather soon. Our study of Mexico is done and we will begin a journey to Canada next week. In addition, we will be staring fiction writing in writer's workshop. In reader's workshop, we have started a new interactive read aloud, Little Dog, Lost by Marion Dane Bauer. We are studying point of view, author's craft, fact/opinion and theme in this book and are making connections with our independent reading books. To wrap up #NovemberPictureBookMonth, we were able to Skype with two different picture book authors, Tara Lazar and Michael Shoulders. It was very exciting and we learned so much! Ask your student to tell you how many pages there are in a picture book, you will be fascinated by the answer!
The quote of the week belongs to Michael Shoulders, "I never said it would be easy, I said it would be worth it." Words to live by for sure!
The speeches were great and everyone survived! Only two more speeches to go this year. :)
This holiday, I am thankful to be a part of the JFK community with such wonderful and supportive parents and students who are kind and caring citizens who give their best everyday!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, enjoy time with family and friends.
