A Big Bite

Good afternoon!

We are close to finishing our unit of study on fractions and decimals in math and the test will be on Thursday, April 1.  The children are loving our interactive read aloud, The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate and enjoy observing animals in zoos and in the wild via webcams from around the world.  We are writing about heroes in writer’s workshop and have continued word study work.  Also, the students are writing poems based on mythical creatures and Greek mythology. We are learning about immigration the westward expansion of the United States.

Only one more week of hybrid learning!  There are several changes to the schedule which will take effect the week we return, nothing to worry about next week!

A Big Bite

Good afternoon!

The students continue to learn about fractions and decimals in math.  We have started a new interactive read aloud, The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate and so far, the children love it!  We are writing about heroes in writer’s workshop and have continued word work with more  Latin Roots.  We are learning about immigration in the northeast and the westward expansion of the United States.  We also participated in a webinar with the author Jacqueline Davies about her new book, Sydney and Taylor. It was a great experience.

March Madness reading is in its third week and the students listened to two historical fiction books; Lucky Beans, read by Mrs. Weiss and New Shoes, read by Dr. Ashley.  Last week’s winner was Corduroy!

Picture day is next week and fliers were sent home earlier this week.  Cohort A will have pictures taken on the 22nd and Cohort B will have pictures taken on March 26th.

In anticipation of returning to full, in person learning on Monday, April 5th, I have begun to make slight adjustments to daily routines in order to hit the ground. This week has seen the return of enough desks and chairs to the classrooms for each student to have their own space.  The backpacks may seem a bit lighter!  I understand that there will be a bit of a learning curve for everyone as we adjust to the new routines.  I anticipate keeping Chromebooks in school during the week and not needing to transport them back and forth in backpacks.

A Big Bite

Good afternoon!

This has been a great week for Spring weather!  WOW!  Let’s hope that it continues. Don’t forget to move your clocks AHEAD this weekend; less sleep = daylight!

We even got outside for some extra recess.

The students did a great job on the math test on Monday and this will help them as we continue with fractions and introduce decimals this week.  The Mythology unit is done but the fire has been lit and many students will continue to pursue this genre on their own.  We will be starting a new interactive read aloud next week so stay tuned for our next title! We will be writing about heroes in writer’s workshop and have continued word work with more  Latin Roots.  We are learning about the history of the Northeast and what makes this such a great place to live.

We made a line plot of our favorite myths.  This class LOVES the monsters in Greek Mythology.

March Madness reading is in its second week and the students listened to Corduroy by Don Freeman , read by Mrs. Merten, and The Little Engine that Could, read by Mrs. Mrs. MacMurray.

Mrs. A won a golden ticket this week for preordering a book about Mary Gold Ross, a Cherokee Engineer and leader in STEM for Women.  So exciting!

A Big Bite

Good afternoon!

March came in like a lamb and quickly turned into a lion and then back again; you have to love New England weather!

We have been learning about mixed numbers and improper fractions in math as well as adding and subtracting fractions.  These are two of the most challenging skills in fourth grade and will take some time for the students to master.  We will have a quiz on these skills on Monday.  We have started  a new unit on Mythology in reading and the students are very excited about this genre!  Students are working with a partner to retell either Goldilocks or Little Red Riding Hood from a different point of view.  This has been a fun writing project so far.  In addition, we have done some word work with Greek and Latin Roots and affixes.  Students will be completing homework assignments based on the words that we are learning in school. Our Earth Science is complete and we have resumed our studies of the northeast region.  Ms. Keating, the children’s librarian at the Franklin Public Library has emailed us to let us know that many students have been taking advantage of the online programs and services that the library offers; way to go!!!!

March Madness reading has begun at Kennedy and students listened to The Couch Potato, by Jory John and Pete Oswald, read by Mr. Banks, and Octopus Stew by Eriq Velasquez, read by Mrs. Jacobs.  It was CLOSE in room 23, we will have to see what the results of the whole school vote is on Friday!

It was "Read Across America," week and in addition to some exciting Greek myths, we also read these picture books. We LOVED them all. Check it out!
