A Big Bite

Kahoot! We played Kahoot to review for the math quiz and everyone was engaged and having fun.  The grades were great and many students said that the math quiz was their "high," from the week.  We have started multiplication so keep working on those facts.  We enjoyed a Skype visit with author, Amy Neilander.  We learned about her writing process and how she was able to publish The Ladybug Race.  We learned so much!  Our focus in reader's workshop has been how to read a graphic novel and we read the novel, Mighty Jack, by Ben Hatke.  Almost everyone has signed up to read the sequel, Mighty Jack and The Goblin King.  I have reserved two copies of the book at my library. :)  We are learning how to find exact locations on earth using longitude and latitude coordinates.  A study guide for the Maps and Globes quiz went home today and the quiz will be on October 11th.  We will be building terrariums next Wednesday, so make sure that you have a container.  Remember, an empty, clear soda bottle works great!

Mrs. Merten has shared a great resource about homework.  As a class, we are doing a great job with homework and this list may help make things go even more smoothly than they are right now.

GENERAL HOMEWORK TIPS FOR PARENTS

✪ Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework. 

Avoid having your child do homework with the television on or in places with other distractions, such as people coming and going.

✪ Make sure the materials your child needs, such as paper, pencils and a dictionary, are available. Ask your child if special materials will be needed for some projects and get them in advance.

✪ Help your child with time management. Establish a set time each day for doing homework. Don‘t let your child leave homework until just

before bedtime. Think about using a weekend morning or afternoon for working on big projects, especially if the project involves getting together with classmates.

✪ Be positive about homework. Tell your child how important school is. The attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child acquires.

✪ When your child does homework, you do homework. Show your child that the skills they are learning are related to things you do as an adult. If your child

is reading, you read too. If your child is doing math, balance your checkbook.

✪ When your child asks for help, provide guidance, not answers. Giving answers means your child will not learn the material. Too much help teaches your child that when the going gets rough, someone will do the work for him or her. 

✪ When the teacher asks that you play a role in homework, do it. Cooperate with the teacher. It shows your child that the school and home are a team. Follow the directions given by the teacher.

✪ If homework is meant to be done by your child alone, stay away.

Too much parent involvement can prevent homework from having some positive effects.  Homework is a great way for kids to develop independent, lifelong learning skills.

✪ Stay informed. Talk with your child‘s teacher. Make sure you know the purpose of homework and what your child‘s class rules are.

✪ Help your child figure out what is hard homework and what is easy homework. Have your child do the hard work first. This will mean he will be most alert when facing the biggest challenges. Easy material will seem to go fast when fatigue begins to set in.

A Big Bite

Engineering, Constitution Day, math, read alouds, reading routines, heart maps, poetry, map skills, word study, technology, morning meetings, end of the week meeting, Dance Party Friday...our weeks are full!!!  Our second full week enabled us to get so much done.  We began Puffmobiles, our first engineering project.  Peter, a structural engineer and one of Mrs. A's former students, and Drew, a civil engineer and FHS graduate, spoke to all 4th graders about the engineering design process.  They also worked with groups on their designs.  We have started a unit on addition and subtraction and there will be a quiz next Friday.  We even had time to start working on algebra skills using Hands On Equations.  We are working on continuing to establish routines in reader's and writer's workshop and have begun word work involving sentences and grammar skills.  Learning about maps has been our focus in social studies and we will keep this focus for the next few weeks.  Our daily meetings have been very beneficial in helping us establish community and in building relationships with each other.  We are working on transitions, self control and organization.  Ask your child about the pictures below!

A Big Bite

It was out first full week of fourth grade, WOW!!! The math test went well and we are getting ready to start a topic on addition and subtraction.  Feel free to use the MobyMax website for practice.  We finished writing goals for fourth grade and are establishing routines in reader's workshop.  Choosing just right books will be our focus over the next few weeks. Creative Arts Friday happened for the first time today and everyone loved it!  Ask your child about the newspaper shoes, Internet safety and what they know about John Keats...you will be impressed!
We have been reading so many great books to get to know each other and to establish community. Ask your child about how we are building a community of learners together.
We were so busy that I didn't take too many pictures...maybe next week!
