At the Core
I am so excited to offer a new club at JFK, Rise and Shine Yoga! I am a level 2 RCY (Radiant child yoga)instructor and a practitioner of Kundalini Yoga. The club will meet on Monday mornings starting on January 24th, and will run for 8 weeks. The cost of the club is $50, and you can sign up at the Lifelong Learning secure site by clicking here. Registration will begin this Wednesday. Check out my yoga blog, www.kidskeepingup.blogspot.com for information about Radiant Child Yoga, and other Yoga resources. At the Core

Dear Parents,
For the past several years, the fourth grade has had the opportunity to work with an “Artist in Residence”, Barbara Cronin. The fourth graders create a ceramic tile with the artist in their classrooms. The tiles are then mounted on the walls around Kennedy. You can find some of our tiles in the lobby, the library, the hallway outside of the nurse’s office, and in the hallway near the cafeteria.
This year, students will be painting tiles which correspond to both social studies and art. They will be painting totem poles which resemble those made during art class and our study of Canada. Students will complete a “rough draft” of their tile in art, and then paint it with our artist. We are grateful to the Kennedy PCC for paying for the materials for this project, and for Mrs. Cronin for donating her time.
As this is a one day event for your child’s class, this is a project which cannot be made up. For your information, Mrs. Cronin will be at Kennedy on May 10th and 11th. Each class will paint a tile on one of these days. If your child is absent on the day his/her class is painting the tiles, there will be no make-up day.
We are looking forward to another great tile mural!

At the Core

Dear Parents,
I cannot believe that the holidays are only three weeks away! Many people told me that time would fly once I had children of my own, and truer words were never spoken! Don and I don’t even remember what we did with all of our time before Livi and Luke came along.
I believe, as many people do, that the holidays are about the “spirit of giving.” Don and I are working on teaching our children that it is better to give than to receive, which is easier said than done sometimes. I know too, that children like to give their teacher a gift at holiday time. I always appreciate everything that the children give to me, but please know that I don’t expect anything. My favorite gifts of all are donations that the children make to a food pantry or charity on my behalf, and then make a card to let me know what they have done. It is wonderful to see the look in their eyes and hear the joy in their voices when they explain how they felt about helping those that are less fortunate than they are. I cherish these moments with them!
One of my favorite charities is the New York Police and Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund. My father and grandfather are retired NYC firemen and my brother is currently a police officer in Brooklyn. Firemen and policemen hold a special place in my heart.
I hope that you will enjoy your holidays, and all of the preparations that go into making this a wonderful and exciting time of the year. Happy Holidays!

Dear Parents,
A quick reminder:
The students should be filling out their reading logs every time they read, and not waiting until the night before it is due to fill it in and ask for signatures. Please only sign the log each time your child reads, not all at once. This is not only an exercise in reading, but an exercise in self discipline, responsibility and independence .

At the Core
Dear Parents,
It is wonderful to see the children so excited about reading! They are sharing books with each other and talking about their reading more and more each day. Some children have donated "finished" books to the classroom library. THANKS!!!! Some children would like to "lend" books to our class for the year. I have established a bucket for the "to lend" books, but please be aware that I cannot guarantee that these books will be returned in the same condition, or even at all, in June. I will not be replacing any books that are lost or damaged. We have discussed this as a class and everyone has agreed that there is a risk to "lending" a book, and understands the consequences if something should happen to a particular book. It is a tough lesson to learn, and I am reminded of it personally every year. Just today, I went looking for two books that I knew I had, only to find that they had not been returned last year. I just wanted all of you to know where I stand on the "lending" issue, and if you are at all concerned about your child's books, please do not allow them to share them with the class.

At the Core
At the Core posts are primarily for parents . These posts may be about upcoming events, general information or classroom needs. With that being said...
The fourth grade teachers will be showing the President's speech to children on Tuesday. Whether you are a Republican, Democrat, Independent, or some other political party, conservative or liberal in your thinking, it is important to respect the office of the President of the United States. With that being said...
We, the students in Room 23, will not be doing any of the activities associated with the speech. We have so much to do already! Please see Mrs. Toye's notice in your child's folder today for more information about the President's Speech.
