A Big Bite

Good afternoon!

It has been a great second week of full, in person learning!  I hope that you are experiencing the same successes at home as I am at school.

We are wrapping up our unit of study on measurement and will have a review day when we return from vacation before testing the children on the skills that they have mastered. We have been writing poetry and stories in writer’s workshop in addition to our working on new words in weekly word study.  The study of physics is popular with 4th graders; ask your child all about the many kinds of energy, you will be impressed by what they know!  We will continue our physics experiments when we return from vacation.

The One and Only Ivan book celebration was very engaging.  We made a line plot of snacks that students had, and completed a watercolor art project.  Many students are looking forward to reading, The One and Only Bob, the sequel to the book, which was just released last summer.  Check it out from the library as a good read over vacation.

Check out some of the pictures from our week; science experiments, outdoor snack and book talks!

Have a great vacation!

A Big Bite

Good afternoon!

I have loved having ALL of the children in school this week, each day!  It has been so good to see all of their faces at once and not on a screen.  It has been a great first week.

We have started a unit of study on measurement and geometry in math.  These are real world skills that you can practice with your student at home. We are almost finished reading The One and Only Ivan and anticipate finishing the book next week.  Our observations of animals on various web cams have revealed some interesting sights, ask your student all about it.

We have begun our final unit of study for the year in science and we are studying physical science.  There are many experiments with this unit and we are all working to make as many of the lessons as hands on as possible in this environment.

We are building our classroom community and relationships and we are focusing on routines and expectations for classwork and homework.  This is going well but everyone will need more time to master these skills.

I am looking forward to another great week!

Have a great weekend!

A Big Bite

Good afternoon!

We have finished our units of study on fractions and decimals and will begin measurement and geometry.  We anticipate that we will finish these units before the Math MCAS on May 26th.  The students are still loving our interactive read aloud, The One and Only Ivan and we have had MANY very interesting conversations about the themes in this story.  The children also enjoy making daily observations of apes, elephants and other animals at various web cams from around the world.  We are writing mythology poems and finishing up our Social Studies unit on the northeast and westward expansion.  Building our classroom community, focusing on routines and expectations for classwork and homework will be a focus in the upcoming weeks.

March Madness reading is winding down.  This year’s final  four are Corduroy, Lucky Beans, The Couch Potato and last week’s winner was Daniel Finds a Poem.

Happy Easter and Happy Passover to all of our families who are celebrating this weekend.
