A Big Bite

2019 is off to a great start!  We have jumped right into fractions in math and are laying a foundation for the next six weeks of math instruction.  We will take a test on basic fraction concepts next Thursday.  Speaking of next Thursday, we hope that you will be able to join us at 9:45 for our Chorus concert.  The children have been working very hard during rehearsals and are ready to perform for you.  You may heard that we have been researching different dogs in order to determine which dog will be right for each individual student.  Determining main idea with supporting details is our focus in reader's workshop and writing complete research with supporting details in order to persuade is our focus in writing.  As we like to say, "We read like writers and we write like readers."
We have been to California to study elephant seals and Antarctica to study penguins during the last two weeks without even leaving the classroom!  Our two Skype visits have been very engaging and are a great way to begin our study of animal adaptations.  In social studies, students are completing travel brochures on Canada and have started to learn about regions in the United States.  We will be starting our travels in the Northeast.
In technology workshop, students have been setting goals for the new calendar year.  Ask your student what they will be working on in 2019.
It's hard to believe that we have started 2019 without any significant snowfall;  there were two snow days in the first two weeks of 2018!  Might we be in a cold, yet snow free pattern?  One can only hope. 😉
