A Big Bite

Good afternoon!

The warm weather has given us a taste of spring and we are looking forward to it! Was it just February vacation last week?  Time is flying by!

We have been learning about mixed numbers and improper fractions in math as well as adding and subtracting fractions.  These are two of the most challenging skills in fourth grade and will take some time for the students to master.  The fraction poster will be due in early March.  We participated in a debate about whether or not farm animals should be allowed to live in town. It was a lively debate with opinions split right down the middle. We have finished Saving Winslow and will begin a new unit on Mythology next week!  This is always one of the most popular reading genres in fourth grade. We enjoyed a program from the children’s librarian at the Franklin Public Library on Thursday.  The students learned all about the many opportunities the library has to offer.  If you haven’t signed your child up for a library card, please do so! Our Earth Science unit will be complete next week and we will resume our studies of the northeast region.  Creative Arts Wednesday continues to be a very popular day for students as they engage in different curriculum activities with each of the teachers.  The students are making great progress!

Good afternoon!

We started the week with snow, followed by a snow day and now some warmer weather.  You just have to love winter in New England.   We continue to learn about fractions in math and this unit will last several weeks.   The fraction poster will be due at the beginning of March, stay tuned for more specific dates. Our earth science unit was put on hold at the beginning of the week but we are back at it, learning about erosion and weathering. When the earth science unit is finished, we will continue our travels around the northeast.  Saving Winslow continues to be popular with students and Sharon Creech, the author, replied to one of our tweetsCheck it out.  We are writing essays about dogs, rap poems and focusing on the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning format in content area writing. We read and listen to picture books by African American authors and illustrators all year long, but we are focusing more specifically on these books in February  to celebrate Black History month and World Read Aloud Day which was this past Wednesday.

Have a great weekend!  One more week until vacation!  Bonus points if you know the movie reference in Mrs. A’s Bitmoji!
