A Big Bite

It was a great week in Room 23!  Everyone worked hard during MCAS and put forth their best effort.  We celebrated the book The One and Only Ivan with many engaging activities.  Ask your child all about it.  We played Bananagrams as part of our Word Study on Friday afternoon.  Thanks to Mrs. Kennally and Mrs. Missagia for sharing the games with us.  As a grade, we  created some crayon art inspired by the main character, Ivan.  It was an auction item at the Ladybug Auction on Friday night.  On Monday we will find out who the lucky winner is who will now have our art work hanging in their home.  Inn science, we completed an experiment on energy using race cars, so cool! Next week, we will take a quiz on geometry and play Kahoot to finish the west region before moving on to the southwest.  Take a few minutes to work on the states and capitals of the west region.  I will post a Quizlet later today.  We will start a new interactive read aloud next week, let's hope no one is afraid of spiders!

A Big Bite

What wonderful weather for the first week of May! It almost feels like summer is almost here; alas, there is still so much to learn and do in 4th grade.  A notice went home on Thursday with a list of important dates/activities to end the fourth grade experience.  Plenty to do still!

This week we were fortunate to have Ms. Liz, JFK Poet in Residence, conduct poetry workshops in our classrooms.  Thanks to the PCC for supporting this program all of these years.  Ms. Liz is a highlight of the year for many students.  The children wrote wonderful free verse poems called "Ear to the Earth."  We can't wait for you to read them!

In math, we have continued to work on geometry and will take the Math MCAS next week.  The geometry test will be on Tuesday, May 15th.  Keep working on those vocabulary words!

Students have been working in cooperative teams to create slide shows about the West region and will be presenting them next week.  There is SO MUCH to love about the west, the varied climate, the landforms, phew!

In reader's workshop we have continued to read The One and Only Ivan and should finish on Monday.  We have tracked how the characters have changed over time and are citing specific evidence for determining theme in a story.  For independent reading, students are focusing on end of the year reading goals.  Reading a variety of genres, providing detailed and specific journal entries and participating in a book club are just some of the goals students have set.  We are in the home stretch now and students are hoping to finish the books in their book bags.  

We will be working in the science lab next week on concepts of Energy.  This will be very engaging I am sure!

At this point in the school year, students have been paired together to run our morning meetings.  We have a solid schedule for the next two weeks.  I am very excited to be a part of this social/emotional learning experience.  I bet you wish you could be a fly on the wall. :)

Oh yes.

A Big Bite

We started the week with a program on waves led by Josh from the Museum of Science in Boston.  Thanks to the PCC for providing this wonderful enrichment program.  It was a great way to kick off our physical science unit.  Also, one of our classmates brought in a skin from his Bearded Lizard to show us an animal adaptation!  Very cool!

We have started our study of the West region and are working in groups to create slideshows about the geography, climate, natural resources, important people and places of the West AND about the Tlingit.  More research next week!

Geometry is the focus of math for the next few weeks.  Everyone is doing a great job with this vocabulary rich unit.  MCAS is during the first full week of May (next week) and we will be ready.  Ask your child about writing constructed responses in math with Mrs. Murray.

We are 2/3s of the way through The One and Only Ivan and should finish soon.  Everyone is LOVING this story.  Ask your child to tell you about the story.  The Rock Poetry project was handed out today, ask your child to tell you all about it!

Next week will be an exciting week as Ms. Liz, our Poet In Residence, will be working with all the fourth grade classes.  Be on the look out for some pictures AND some great poetry written by students.

It has been a while since we had a T-shirt of the Day, and we had four on Thursday!!! Way to #bringit!

I would call them heroes! Including the person wearing the shirt!
