Bookworm Buzz

Here are some reviews of books that I have been reading over vacation.  The first one, Marcus and Rorden's Adventures on Bark Lane, I was asked to review by the publisher.  It was so much fun to review this book because I got to look at it through many lenses as a reader AND as a writer. As we always say, "we read like writers and we write like readers."  I hope that you have found some time to read over vacation! Enjoy!
Marcus and Rorden's Adventures on Bark LaneMarcus and Rorden's Adventures on Bark Lane by Jan Alcock
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What a fun and exciting tale of two friends who go on an adventure with unexpected twists and turns! Readers will love that the characters are all dogs, dressed in clothes, living in houses and have a community. Marcus and Rorden are hoping to have some fun on their own in their neighborhood on the first day of vacation, without their parents knowledge, and quickly run into troubles along the way. They are recognized by relatives, friends and other adults in the neighborhood and learn that being out on your own can be very stressful. They decide to head back to the safety of their own homes and not rush growing up, a good lesson for young readers. The illustrations are beautifully detailed, realistic, and add depth and meaning to the story. A wonderful book for debut author, Jane Alcock.

So much going on here; sister in a car accident, segregation, school integration, moving, first love, new school, racism in the south. Many ideas to discuss with students.

Wow, such an interesting read. Loved the illustrations. Great for those writers who say, "I can't think of anything to write."

Absolutely loved this wordless picture book. Such a great story and the ladybugs are rendered true to size. Love, love love!
